Beaumont's 20-Year Plan Heads to City Council Oct. 6

Blueprint Special : The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously recommended the new comprehensive plan Monday. It covers housing, transportation, parks and infrastructure. Policy changes come first; visible projects land 10 to 20 years out.
Home Improvement : Residents asked for townhomes, condos and accessory dwelling units alongside single-family homes and large apartment complexes. Planning director Demi Engman hopes sidewalks and bike lanes show up within a decade.

🕰️ THIS DAY IN SETX HISTORY

September 27, 1956 : Port Arthur-born Babe Didrikson Zaharias died at 45 and was buried in Beaumont. She won two gold medals and a silver at the 1932 Olympics, breaking world records in all three events, and later helped found the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

Dunham's Sports Will Fill Central Mall's Old Sears Space

Anchors Aweigh : Dunham's is taking the 100,000-square-foot former Sears anchor at Central Mall in Port Arthur. It will be the sporting goods chain's first store in Texas.
Hiring Grounds : Mall owner Joe Aref expects 100 to 200 full-time jobs once it opens and 300 to 400 construction jobs before that. He says occupancy has climbed from about 50% when he bought the mall to nearly 78%.

💡 The bottom line: Up to 200 permanent retail jobs are headed to Port Arthur, and Aref says more store announcements come early next year.

💧 Beaumont water bills under fire : Mayor Pro Tem Cory Crenshaw wants the billing and disconnection policy changed after residents reported wrong bills, one near $2,000 that should have been about $40.

🌳 Storm debris pickup runs two more weeks : Beaumont crews have hauled about 2,784 tons since Edouard, against 800 on a normal sweep. Field to College is next.

🎒 BISD logs 18,125 absences in 21 days : That is more than one per enrolled student, with about half from repeat absentees. Martin Luther King Academy posted 98% attendance.
