Gift of Life Opens Its Halloween 5K in Beaumont

Monster Mash-Up : The Monster Dash edition runs Saturday, Oct 31 from 701 Main Street, wellness village from 7:30 AM, ceremony at 8, the 5K at 9.
Named For A Neighbor : It carries the name of Julie Richardson Procter, a Gift of Life board member who died of ovarian cancer in 2011. The money funds free mammograms.

🕰️ THIS DAY IN SETX HISTORY

September 21, 1971 : The trial in Borel v. Fibreboard opened in Judge Joseph J. Fisher's federal courtroom in Beaumont. Orange attorney Ward Stephenson represented Clarence Borel, a Groves insulation worker dying of mesothelioma. Eight days later the jury sided with Borel, the first case in the country to test strict liability against asbestos makers.

The Navy Picks an Orange Shipyard for Landing Craft

Two To Start : Conrad is one of three yards sharing a $280.5 million prototype program for LCU 1700 landing craft. Its Orange yard builds two, with options for two more.
Built Under Roof : The work goes to 710 Market Street: about 25 acres with 1,900 feet of Sabine River frontage, six enclosed construction bays and a 1,600-ton marine railway.

💡 The bottom line: Deliveries run from late 2028 into 2029, so this is three years of steady welding, fitting and vendor orders at a yard on the Sabine, not a one-season contract.

📋 IN OTHER NEWS

🏭 About 170 Golden Pass workers went out for treatment : Port Arthur crews moved them by bus to three medical facilities after a Wednesday employee breakfast at the Sabine Pass terminal. No cause has been confirmed.

🏛️ Beaumont's tax rate goes to a final vote : The city proposed $0.695 per $100, up from $0.659663, raising $8.15 million more than last year's budget. The vote is Sept 29.

🎓 The superintendent who desegregated Port Arthur ISD has died : Dr. Joe Pitts led the district from 1982 to 1992 and died Sept 13 at 91. PAISD credits him with completing desegregation peacefully.

👑 Delta Sigma Theta wants seniors for its 2027 cotillion : The Port Arthur Alumnae Chapter meets Monday at 6:30 PM at the Texas Artists Museum. The cotillion is March 6, 2027.
