Lamar Football Returns With a Playoff Rematch

Why This One Matters: Abilene Christian ended Lamar's last season with a 38-20 win in the first round of the FCS playoffs. The Wildcats return to Beaumont ranked No. 15.
Game-Day Details: Kickoff is at 6 PM at Provost Umphrey Stadium. The opener also doubles as Lamar's 409 Day and will stream on ESPN+.

🚧 Train quiet zones are returning to Beaumont's West End: The Federal Railroad Administration has lifted the suspension, so train horns should stop again. It may take a little time for the update to reach every engineer, but residents can report ongoing horn use through 311.

🧼 Vidor ISD confirmed scabies cases: Most of the reported cases were at the high school. The district deep-cleaned its buildings over the weekend and fumigated the athletic facilities. Parents were asked to wash anything worn Thursday in hot water.

🩸 Donate blood before the end of August: Gulf Coast Blood donors who give by Aug 31 can receive a limited-edition Puff Bag, a free cholesterol screening and a Blue Bell voucher.

🤝 United Board of Missions is asking for help: Donations can be dropped off at 6650 9th Avenue in Port Arthur. The pantry also needs volunteers Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to noon. Call 409-962-5661 for details.

🏐 Lamar volleyball begins its season: The Cardinals open the ACU Invitational in Abilene on Aug 28 with matches against Cal State Bakersfield and Abilene Christian, followed by North Texas on Aug 29.

⚽ Lamar soccer earns a draw at Rice: The women's team tied Rice 1-1 on Saturday, three days after a 1-0 win over Louisiana Tech. The Cardinals now sit at 1-1-2.

🎣 A new fishing tournament is coming to Port Arthur: The first Southeast Texas Fishing Classic will take place on Sep 12.

Beaumont ISD Ends Corporal Punishment in a 3-2 Vote

What Changed: Trustees voted 3-2 to remove corporal punishment from the district's discipline policy. Arthur Louis Jr. and Desmond Bridges Sr. voted against the change.
Also From the Meeting: Superintendent Sandi Massey reported that 3,417 students had missed at least one day during the first seven days of school. The district also recorded absences from 110 teachers.

💡 The bottom line: Corporal punishment is no longer part of Beaumont ISD's discipline policy. The attendance figures are a separate concern, showing how many students and teachers have already missed at least one day this school year.

🌪️ A possible tornado damaged a church near Buna: A landspout or tornado crossed FM 1004 in the Cairo community around 4:30 PM Saturday and tore part of the roof from Genesis Baptist Church.

🍔 Chloe's Burgers is getting ready to reopen: The Parkdale Mall shop closed for about a week to install a vent hood required by the fire marshal. Brandon Rodriguez expects to reopen beside Benny's Pizza on Aug 28 or 31, depending on inspections.

🏊 Special Olympics Texas brought two days of swimming to Beaumont: Area 5 held a skills event on Aug 21, followed by races and relays on Aug 22. Beaumont police officers joined the celebration and handed out trophies.

💰 Beaumont's highest-paid city positions trail Waco's: KFDM lists Beaumont's city manager salary at $245,000 and its city attorney salary at $214,600, compared with $273,000 in Waco. Beaumont's figures are current, while the comparison-city figures are from 2024, so the gap may be smaller than it first appears.
