Elsewhere this week the city races a FEMA deadline on a flood-warning system for its underpasses, Some Other Place and Revive team up to get unhoused neighbors into addiction treatment faster, and Port Arthur closes a lane on Ransom Howard Street through mid-October. Plus: axe-throwing and smash burgers at Avenue Axe in Port Neches, a sober community worth a follow, an early-morning walk through Cattail Marsh before the heat sets in, and a job fair happening today.

📰 THE BIG NEWS
Beaumont Is Chasing $3.8 Million to Keep the Zip Rolling 🚌
Beaumont is pursuing roughly $3.8 million in combined state and federal funds to keep the BMT Zip bus system running and to invest in improvements — money that would flow through the Federal Transit Administration and TxDOT rather than out of the city's own pocket. The City Council opened a public hearing on the grant application Tuesday, July 21, at City Hall. This is the city applying, not money in the bank yet.
BMT Zip is Beaumont's fixed-route and paratransit bus network — the system that gets seniors to appointments, students to campus, and workers to shifts when there's no car in the driveway. That's the whole case for it. Transit funding is invisible until it isn't: the day the buses stop is the day a big slice of the city can't get where it needs to go. Chasing outside dollars to hold the line on service is exactly the kind of unglamorous work that keeps a city moving.
💡 The bottom line: Nothing's awarded yet but this is Beaumont putting in the application. Now, if the $3.8M lands, it's federal and state money keeping local buses on the road, and that touches a lot more neighbors than the size of a transit line item suggests.
📋 THE RUNDOWN
🌧️ Beaumont Is Applying for a Flood-Warning System at Its Underpasses — The city is going after roughly $827,000 in FEMA mitigation money to put water-level sensors and flashing warning lights at flood-prone underpasses, with the MLK Jr. Parkway underpasses named. The application deadline is today, July 22. As Public Works Director Amalia Villarreal put it, the ground there sits low and "creates essentially a bowl," so the water has to be pumped out to keep the road clear. Until it's funded and built, treat those underpasses with real caution when the rain comes down hard.
🤝 Some Other Place + Revive Team Up to Speed People Into Treatment — Through the Beaumont Mayor's Homeless Coalition, Some Other Place and Revive Recovery Center of Beaumont have launched a partnership to connect unhoused residents with addiction treatment faster. Revive staff will be on-site at Some Other Place at least weekly — insured clients can begin admissions right away, and uninsured folks get help enrolling in coverage first, alongside sober-living, employment, and basic-needs support. It's a warm handoff instead of a phone number, which is often the whole difference.
🚧 Port Arthur Closes a Lane on Ransom Howard Through Mid-October — The eastbound right (outside) lane of W. Rev. Dr. Ransom Howard St. between Grannis Ave. and Denbo Ave. is closed for construction from July 20 through Oct. 12. If that's your commute, build in a little extra time and expect it to stick around a while.
🩺 Free Men's Health & Prostate Screening Comes to Beaumont Saturday — The Gift of Life Men's Health & Prostate Cancer Screening lands at the LIT Multipurpose Center, 802 E. Lavaca, Beaumont, on Saturday, July 25, with free screenings starting at 9 AM and walk-ins welcome.
